Tensions remain high within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti region’s Asawase constituency, with the constituency chairman, Faisal Dauda, accusing the Member of Parliament, Muntaka Mubarak, of allegedly hiring thugs to gun him down.
The Asawase constituency has been described as one of the National Democratic Congress (NDC ) strongholds’s in the Ashanti region over the years.
However, in recent weeks, alleged conflict between the member of Parliament for the area who also serves as the minority chief whip, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, and the NDC constituency chairman, Faisal Dauda, has alarmed many party members.
While many constituents have urged the two to smoke the peace pipe, it appears that the tension between them is growing.
Speaking to journalists at a news conference in the constituency, Asawase NDC constituency chairman Faisal Dauda accused the member of Parliament of plotting to kill him because of their misunderstanding.
“My life has been under threat since my days as the constituency treasurer. There was a time Honourable Muntaka, the constituency organizer, the constituency vice chairman, and the former constituency chairman had a meeting in his office at the Aboabo post office, the library premises and invited some bad boys and gave them a message that they should gun down the constituency deputy youth organizer and myself.”
Additionally, Faisal Dauda said the minority chief whip is conspiring with the current administration to ensure that the NDC loses the elections in 2024.
Faisal Dauda also alleged that the minority chief whip is in bed with the incumbent government and has thus been scheming for the NDC to lose the 2024 polls.
“Everybody knows that honourable Muntaka has conspired against the NDC in Parliament and connived with the NPP. Everything going on in parliament indicates that Honourable Muntaka has connived with NPP so that John Mahama cannot become president, and he will continue serving his personal interest in parliament so that he will get what he wants as an individual”.
Thus, the Asawase NDC chairman has vowed to make sure that the MP is challenged in the party’s primary elections.
“I did it solely for him in 2019, and he succeeded (in running unopposed in the primaries). This time around, he is not going to succeed. There will be a contest in Asawase”.
The allegations made against the Asawasi MP have been refuted by his office. Thus, Abdul Haq, the MP’s secretary, is requesting that the interior ministry and the Ghana Police Service look into the accusations.
“The news conference by the Asawase NDC chairman was nothing. It was just baseless allegations, bogus, and lacked merit. There is nothing to write home about. I would like to draw the attention of the interior minister, the IGP, and the Ghana Police Service, in general, to take him on”.
