The Acting Executive Director of the Ghana Museum and Monuments Board, Mr. Kingsley Ofosu Ntiamoah, has said the national museum in Accra since its renovation has attracted roughly 10,000 visitors.
The museum established in 1957, had to be closed to the public in 2015 due to a lack of maintenance.
Speaking in an interview with Accra-based radio, Asaase radio on July 26, Mr. Ofosu said “for about a month now we have received about 10, 000 visitors to the museum.
“So it tells you that Ghanaians were very hungry to visit the National Museum. Currently, we have three museums running in Accra…”
“We’ve been doing quite well. We’ve been able to refurbish the Volta Regional Museum which had not also seen refurbishment since 1979.”
“We’ve been able to refurbish the place very nice and about a month ago, I was in Bolgatanga to open the Upper East Museum and so these are all efforts to drive traffic to our sites and also to the country for our economy to grow,” he added.
In June 2022, President Nana Addo Dankwa-Akufo-Addo reopened the National Museum in Accra.
With the addition of new exhibits and artefacts, the national museum has now undergone a thorough rehabilitation and restoration to its original state.
The President stated that the refurbished National Museum is expected to attract about 150,000 visitors each year and will contribute significantly to the country’s goal to achieve one million domestic tourist arrivals.
To enrich the experience of visitors to the museum, the curators of the National Museum have also added seven of the vehicles used by former Heads of State, including three (3) E-450 Mercedes Benz vehicles, two (2) Nissan Patrols, a limousine, and a Toyota Land Cruiser.
