Former energy minister Boakye Agyarko has stated that he is ready for the run-off election for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential nomination in November.
Former MP Francis Addai-Nimoh and Agyarko each received nine votes (0.98%) in the first round of voting on Saturday (26 August), putting them in a run-off for fifth place on September 2. The first primary goal was to reduce the number of candidates from ten to five.
Agyarko released a statement on Monday disputing media claims that he had given up to save the party another election.
“My attention has been drawn to some false claims and reports that, I, Boakye Agyarko have withdrawn from the NPP presidential primaries,” the statement read.
“I have not made any such pronouncements with anyone or any media house. I am ready for the upcoming run-off scheduled for Saturday 2 September 2023,” he added.
The vice president, Mahamudu Bawumia, secured a resounding win in the recently concluded special electoral college, taking a significant step towards becoming the presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to the official results released by the Electoral Commission, Bawumia received 629 votes, representing 68.15% of all valid votes cast throughout the 17 polling centres, to win the race.
