Parliament has authorised a $150 million credit facility from the World Bank to support the ongoing Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project, which aims to solve flooding challenges in the city.
The loan was authorised despite resistance from the minority caucus.
The minority group claimed that the government mismanaged a previously granted borrowing facility of $200 million for the GARID project. This was the basis for their concern in supporting the new loan.
Nonetheless, following a headcount vote that supported the majority caucus, the House approved the lending arrangement.
Meanwhile, Emmanuel Bedzrah, a member of the Works and Housing Committee, expressed his concerns, saying, “If the entire Odaw [river] has not been drained for two years and $200 million has been allocated, and the Odaw river has not been drained, desilted, or dredged, I don’t see why we need another $150 million.
