Following weeks of debate and deliberation, Ghana’s Parliament is set to pass the 2024 budget today. The budget, which the Finance Minister submitted to Parliament last month, sets the government’s fiscal and economic intentions for the following year.
In recent weeks, members of Parliament have been involved in intense budget debates, with opposition members voicing concerns about specific allocations and the broader economic policy.
However, the budget is set to be passed by a majority headcount vote in Parliament today.
After the conclusion of the discussion on Wednesday, November 29, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, proclaimed a voice vote in support of the Majority on budget approval.
The Minority Caucus, however, appealed the verdict and chose a headcount, causing the Majority group to organise a walkout.
The Speaker, Alban Bagbin, then stated that a headcount vote on the acceptance of the government’s economic strategy and budget statement will be held today, December 7, to clear the way for the adoption of budget estimates.
