The Committee formed to investigate an alleged attempt to depose the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has adjourned indefinitely.
After Wednesday’s meeting, the Committee’s Chair, Samuel Atta Akyea, told journalists that the Committee would be interrogating a new set of evidence presented to it by the lawyers of former COP George Alex Mensah.
“There was written evidence that we will look at, and it came from COP retired George Alex Mensah. He has additional evidence, so he released it to the committee. The matters are coming to a head, and we afforded the witnesses the opportunity to say whether they have anyadditional matters they want to look at. What we have garnered so far, we want to retire and look at it, and then we could start writing our report,” Samuel Atta Akyea said.
Earlier this week, the IGP’s legal representatives accused the committee of exceeding its mandate and treating the IGP unfairly.
However, Samuel Atta Akyea rejected the charges, claiming that he was not biassed against the IGP. He also argued that the committee had not exceeded its authority.
The virally leaked tape of IGP Dampare has sparked much discussion and debate. Bugri Naabu had already assured the Committee that the recording was genuine.
The released recording shows Bugri Naabu discussing the removal of the IGP with three senior police officers: retired COP Alex Mensah, Superintendent George Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi.
