The Member of Parliament of North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa is leading a protest today, Tuesday, June 18, against the sale of four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel Limited, which is owned by Ghana’s Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.
Mr. Ablakwa stated that the protest aims to urge the president to intervene and halt the sale of these hotels. He confirmed during a press conference on Monday, June 17, that all arrangements for the demonstration are complete.
Speaking to the press the North Tongu MP emphasized the peaceful nature of the protest and assured that any attempts to incite chaos would be handled by the Ghana Police Service.
Mr. Ablakwa also mentioned that he expects representatives from the presidency to meet the demonstrators at Christ the King Catholic Church to receive their petition for submission to the president.
“We have agreed with the police on the condition that the representatives of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will walk from the Jubilee House and meet us at the Christ the King Catholic Church to receive our petition.”
“We are very peaceful protestors and law-abiding as well. So, we can give the Ghanaian people the full assurances that this agreement with the Ghana Police Service will be adhered to,” he said.
He has also petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate the transaction, citing concerns over transparency and the ongoing nature of the sale process despite public opposition.
Mr. Ablakwa expressed confidence in CHRAJ’s ability to conduct a thorough investigation but believes additional pressure is necessary to compel SSNIT to suspend the transaction
