The mayor of Accra, Elizabeth Kwatsoe Sackey, has issued a warning to roadside vendors to stop selling at the peripherals of roads.
She stated that persons found guilty will be fined and their property will be seized, she said.
Sackey advised people to avoid purchasing items from roadside vendors in order to alleviate traffic congestion and environmental pollution.
She stated that the assembly is taking inventory of vacant sheds in Accra’s marketplaces and will not hesitate to re-allocate abandoned sheds to traders willing to do business in them.
The mayor issued the warning after the Accra Metropolitan Assembly coordinated a clean-up operation at the Agbogbloshie Market.
The activity was part of a larger strategy to decongest and ease traffic on the 2.5-kilometer route, as well as to enhance hygiene in the market and its surroundings.
The initiative, which was backed by personnel from the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana Fire Service, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, and the Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly, focused on desilting and removing solid trash from drains, mostly plastic garbage.
Sackey said that plans are in place to procure extra skip bins for placement at strategic spots in the market for waste collection.
