Two male students from the Fumbisi Senior High School in the Builsa South District of the Upper East Region were injured in a tribal dispute at the school on Wednesday (15 March).
Several additional male students have suffered minor injuries as a result of the clashes.
Following an earlier attack on a Builsa student on Tuesday (14 March), retaliatory violent attacks erupted Wednesday night between students from Bawku and the Union of Builsa Students of the institution.
According to reports, three pupils from the school in Bawku allegedly beat up a house prefect on Tuesday for standing up to their mistreatment of a junior student.
Per the reports, three older male students were enraged by the house prefect’s actions and launched an attack on him, beating him viciously.
The attack on the house prefect, a Builsa student, sparked outrage among the school’s Builsa pupils, who went out and attacked students of Bawku descent.
The district chief executive, Daniel Gariba for the area, confirmed the event to OilCity Radio and claimed the police were called in to bring the situation under control.
He stated that two students were later discovered to have broken legs and were brought to a private bone specialist clinic in Zuarungu for medical assistance.
Following the incidents, the school’s final-year male students have been asked to leave the premises.
DCE Gariba stated that the decision was made by the District Security Council (DISEC) and the regional directorate of Ghana Education Service (GES).
He stated that the decision was made to allow for an inquiry and to assist restore calm.
“When we assessed the situation, we realised the problem (violence) was dominantly orchestrated by the final-year students. So, we thought that if we allow them to sleep again this night, the situation will be worse. So, we decided that all third-year students who are males should go home,” Gariba said.
