A group of armed men stormed the United Progressive Party’s (UPP) Ashanti Regional headquarters on Monday afternoon, shooting and smashing the vehicles that belonged to the founder, Akwasi Addai, also known as Odike.
According to reports, the event happened in the late afternoon at Patase, a suburb of Kumasi, and close to the Kumasi Police Training School.
Additionally, the armed men are accused of assaulting the office’s workers.
Last week, Mr. Addai, a well-known businessman in Kumasi, allegedly pointed accusing fingers at Manhyia, saying they were complicit in the unlawful mining and destruction of the nation’s water and forest resources.
Speaking on a local radio station in Kumasi, Odike mentioned that the chiefs couldn’t claim ignorance of the illegal miners’ activities within their communities and believed they were a contributing factor to the issue.
Some of the traditional leaders in the area were offended by his remarks, so they killed a ram to expel him from Kumasi.
But it’s not clear whether the assault on his workplace was connected to what happened.
It is unclear, however, whether the attack on his office was related to the events of the weekend.
So far, no arrests have been made, and authorities have been tight-lipped about the event.
