Voters in the Kumawu constituency will vote in a by-election today, May 23, 2023, to find a replacement for their late Member of Parliament, Philip Basoah.
On Tuesday, voting officially began at 7 a.m. at various polling stations throughout the constituency.
The two main political parties, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), have both made efforts to annex the parliamentary seat.
Following the demise of Philip Basoah, the Electoral Commission (EC) issued a notice of poll to hold a by-election to elect an MP for the constituency.
The EC, which is in charge of organising the by-election, has stated that all necessary materials are on hand.
The NDC’s Akwasi Amankwaa, also known as ‘Tom Cee,’ the NPP’s Ernest Yaw Anim, and two other independent candidates with the same name, Kwaku Duah, are among the parliamentary candidates.
Prior to the by-election, the two major political parties canvassed votes for their parliamentary candidates.
They both introduced their parliamentary candidate to the area’s chiefs and people.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President, has also urged New Patriotic Party supporters to turn out in large numbers on Tuesday, May 23, to vote overwhelmingly for the party’s parliamentary candidate for Kumawu, Ernest Yaw Anim.
Interacting with NPP supporters in Kumawu ahead of the by-election, the Vice President stated that they want to demonstrate to Ghana that Kumawu is NPP territory and that they are well-positioned to retain the seat.
The NDC and the NPP have both pledged to play their respective roles in ensuring peace during and after the Kumawu by-election on Tuesday, May 23, 2023.
The assurance was given following a meeting between the Inspector General of Police, Mr. George Akuffo Dampare, and the leaders of the competing political parties ahead of the elections.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Youth Organiser, George Opare Addo, has hinted that the NDC will likely pull a surprise and cause an upset by winning the Kumawu by-election.
Mr. Addo stated that the NDC’s hard work in the by-election will propel the party to victory.
