The Member of Parliament for Kwesimintsim constituency, Western region, Hon. Dr. Prince Hamid Armah on Thursday, September 14, 2023, cut sod for the construction of projects under the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Program (GSCSP).
The GSCSP is a developmental program aimed at improving urban management and basic urban services in participating municipal assemblies (MAs).
The program will constitute a slice of the government’s broader decentralization support program (the responsiveness factor grant (RFG) and its associated district performance assessment tool (DPAT)), specifically focusing on MAs that manage urban development in secondary cities.
The construction includes an 850-meter storm drain, stretching from the Anaji Choice Mart to I Adu, aimed at mitigating the perennial flooding issues along this route.
The Kwesimintsim Taxi and Trotro rank will also be transformed into an ultramodern two-story complex, featuring fifty-seven lockable shops with offices. The open space for our Taxi and Trotro drivers will also be paved.
Additionally, a 150-meter storm drain and a box culvert will be added to connect the initial 500-meter storm drain constructed around the Kwesimintsim Titanic area to the 850-meter storm drain at I Adu.
These projects will effectively address the perpetual flooding problems that have resulted in incalculable damages, as well as providing a more suitable environment for our taxi and Trotro drivers, as well as the passengers and traders that use the Kwesimintsim Taxi and Trotro rank.
Dr. Armah described how, over the years, he has been in frequent discussions with the government about a program to aid with floods in Kwesimintsim.
“It is heartbreaking to hear how people lose properties that they have spent all their lives to acquire. As an educationist, I’m particularly disturbed when schools have to close because of the impact.
“Therefore, I am very happy that the construction of a storm drain has been captured under the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme. And as you heard the Minister for Local Government say, funding has been secured.”
He assured his constituents of his commitment to ensure that nothing impedes the construction of projects.
“What I have to do and will be committed to is to ensure that nothing inhibits the project. Because this project will be a glorious opportunity to end flooding at Choice Mart, I Adu, and the rest.”
He also commended development partners and the assembly for their consistent support in the development of Kwesimintsim.
Present at the ceremony was the Minister for Local Government, Honourable Dan Botwe, the Western Regional Minister and Member of Parliament for Takoradi, Honourable Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, Minister of Public Enterprises and Member of Parliament for Effia, Honourable Joseph Cudjoe, and Municipal Chief Executive for EKMA, Honourable Kojo Acquah, along with distinguished traditional and religious leaders and constituents.
