The Shama District Health Directorate has requested medical supplies from humanitarian organisations and individuals following the Anto-Aboso quarry explosion.
In a health screening, the district health director, Ms. Naa Dede Okine revealed that the omni quarry explosion had a variety of repercussions on the adjacent villages, and the health team worked under time constraints to deliver a variety of aid throughout the week to reduce the disaster’s effects on people’s health.
“This is an ongoing process, and we need to access affected communities in the four sub-districts to ascertain the level of health impact, prescribe medication, or even refer to a larger facility for care,” she said.
In addition, the explosion damaged four Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) facilities, as well as the roofs and ceilings of multiple residences.
She also stated that the district was constantly connecting with communities to assess the magnitude of the impact and record it for potential future measures.
According to the Member of Parliament for Shama, Hon. Erickson Abakah the purpose of the eye and general health exam is to ensure that medical workers can discover signs in time for treatment to prevent future problems.
“We know these gases pollute the air and cause irritation on skin, eyes, throat and other parts of the body hence, our decision to organise the screening to save the lives of affected communities,” he added.
More than 300 persons were tested, and some of them were sent to larger medical centres in the area.
