As part of the Youth Employment Agency’s Community Health Worker (CHW) module, more than 6000 youth graduated on Friday, October 14, 2022, across Ghana’s 16 regions.
The beneficiaries will now receive a monthly allowance of GHC500, an increase from the GHC250 that their preceding cohorts received.
In the YEA’s CHW module, young people from different communities are chosen, trained, and assigned to work in particular districts, sub-districts, and communities across the nation to support community health officers, nurses, and midwives in the delivery of health services, particularly in the areas of health promotion, disease surveillance, and disease prevention.
The current CHW module, developed in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service, is an improved version of previous ones with a new emphasis on enhancing beneficiaries’ impacts on their communities, enhancing citizens’ well-being, and, most importantly, significantly assisting beneficiaries in identifying their career paths.
Speaking at the national passing out ceremony in the Eastern Region on Friday, YEA CEO Kofi Baah Agyepong disclosed that for the first time, formal agreements had been made with the Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Health to grant the beneficiaries a special dispensation during admissions to nursing training schools, predicated on the necessary field and practical knowledge.
He commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his adherence to the sustainable development goals as well as his commitment to youth employment and development. According to him, the government has made funding available to run the CHW and other modules despite the terrible economic problems experienced both locally and globally, to guarantee that the youth have work.
The delighted recipients thanked President Akufo-Addo for the chance, particularly the 100% increase in their allowance.
The agency would not tolerate absenteeism, laziness, or misbehaviour throughout their engagement period, Agyepong warned the beneficiaries nationwide. He urged them to work very hard and diligently.
Agyepong also raised the point that in the upcoming months, the YEA’s Community Protection Assistants Module would be hiring over 15,000 new employees.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, who was accompanied by some MCEs, praised the government for the multiple initiatives aimed at increasing possibilities and alleviating or lowering the impact of the current global economic problems on Ghanaians, particularly the youth.
The national ceremony was hosted by the Eastern Regional Director of the Youth Employment Agency, Jerry Osei-Poku, and his crew, while all other regions staged similar events to distribute their recipients.
